Project summary/background
Typos occur in library catalogs. There is even a website devoted to finding them!
This project is to search for the typos found to occur most frequently and correct them.
Project instructions
Open the spreadsheet Typos-Highest Probability. Typos-Highest Probability
Put your initials in some of the rows. This helps keep others from editing the same data at the same time.
Do a Keyword search on the word in the Typo column, including the * if present. The * acts as a wildcard character in the search.
I’ve included some suggestions for the correct spellings in the Notes column.
Find the typo in each record retrieved. It could by anywhere in the record.
IGNORE any typos in the 245 $a or $b, any typo followed by [sic], and the names of people/groups (who may intentionally use a misspelling as their name).
Note: You can use the ‘find in page’ function in Sierra. When a record is open in the Cataloging module, use CTRL-F to open a ‘find in page’ search box. Enter the typo in the box and press Enter. The typo will be highlighted in yellow.
Tip: You have to x out of the search box before you edit the record.
Tip: The yellow highlighting may persist from record to record. If this becomes unbearable, reboot Sierra to make it go away.
When you’ve corrected the typo(s), Save the record.
Note: The Keyword index does not immediately re-index itself, so the records you’ve corrected will continue to appear in search results for that typo until the next day.
Rinse and repeat!
