Copy cataloging posters from MSS 626
Summary: Instructions for copy cataloging posters from MSS 626 (inventory here).
Fields that are different than monographs
Records on a Visual Materials form is preferred, but not required. Most records will be on a Visual Materials form, but depending on the amount of text and/or the comfort of the original cataloger, records can also be on a Books form.

Choose the best copy available paying special attention to:
Title
Creator/Publisher information
Dimensions
Different descriptive standards
Posters can be described using various descriptive standards. While we prefer RDA, some of the copy may be better using other standards. Because this is unpredictable, it's worth looking a bit at the documentation to ensure what's being recorded in the record matches the piece in hand.
RDA (preferred)
Graphic Materials (marc code gihc in the 040 field)
DCRM-G (marc code dcrmg in the 040 field)
Assigning call numbers
Assign call numbers in the 099 field in order of cataloging:
MSS 626-001, MSS 626-002, MSS 626-003, etc.
Evaluating subject headings
Best practice is to add $v Posters to the end of the subject heading string.
Per H1945.5, we assign ethnicity poster subject headings for posters from or about the ethnic group.
"War posters, American" will likely need to be added to all of these posters.
"Political posters, American" could be useful if cataloger's judgement deems the poster political in nature.
If neither of the above fit, assign "Posters, American."
Genre/form terms for posters
Assign in the 655_7 for the genre of posters:
War posters ǂ2 lcgft
Propaganda posters ǂ2 lcgft
I think these will all include this, but if your catalogers judgement says it doesn't fit, or you want to discuss, that's fine!
Optional
Political posters ǂ2 lcgft
If none of these fit, assign: Posters ǂ2 lcgft
