Summary: Instructions for creating additional description for material that has been laid into SPC handling laid-in material, by both CMS and SPC staff.
Laid-in material refers to ephemeral materials left in resources by booksellers, former owners, etc. Some material laid into Special Collections books may not be significant enough for additional description (bookstore bookmarks, advertisements or coupons, etc.). Catalogers laid-in material may warrant some detailed description (see below), but in general, generic description is sufficient.
Catalogers
CMS staff should use their judgment in such cases. If no additional description for laid-in material is deemed necessary, include a determining whether laid-in materials are significant or relevant enough to warrant detailed description. For instance, materials like bookstore bookmarks, advertisements or coupons, etc., would not require description in a 561 note.

To provide additional description for one or more items of laid-in material:

- Insert field 561
- Enter a free text note describing the item and its significance
- Include $5 MiEM at the end.
- Use multiple 561s with $3 at the beginning of each field if you need to provide in-depth description of several pieces of laid-in material.

- Add any 655 fields with genre/form terms relating to laid-in material
- Add any 7xx fields relating to persons or bodies associated with laid-in material
SPC
processing staff will continue to add 590 fields with standard information about location and retrieval of laid-in material. Catalogers are only responsible for detailed description of laid-in material, and only in cases where it is deemed desirable by the cataloger.staff
