Relabeling (reclass)

Summary: Procedure details steps to be followed in order to reclass and/or relabel items.

Items will be relabeled – in the case where a call number on an item is incorrect – or reclassed – in the case where an item is determined to have the wrong call number.

  1. Verify the call number to be used is not a duplicate call number. Pull all copies or volumes of the title to be relabeled.
  2. Search book by title or call number in Sierra. Verify barcodes are correct while processing.
  3. Replace the old call number with the new one assigned by the cataloger. The call number to replace will appear in the first line of the record in full screen edit. If there is a second 090 in the bib. record that is different than the one you have just assigned, delete the second 090 from the record.
  4. Delete any note in Sierra (usually in the item record) that makes reference to the fact that the book will be reclassed or relabeled.
  5. Write down the new call number in the book. Verify there is only one call number written in the piece and all old call numbers have been erased.
  6. Stamp book with appropriate location stamp if required.
  7. Place book on the relabel shelves to be relabeled. Do not mark old label with marker or pen. If piece is a Reference book or Rush book it should be placed on the Monograph Rush Shelf.
