Summary: This page covers the cataloging process for SPC comics materials. For general SPC cataloging procedures, see Special Collections (general)

1. Comics Studies Librarian selects and delivers materials for cataloging.

  • Insert a blue COMICS streamer for each title.

  • Use the front of the streamer to convey any information and/or notes desired for the catalog record.

  • Deliver selected materials to the designated shelf in the Acquisitions closet in the Tech Services staff area.

  • Email the comics cataloger to notify them that materials have been delivered.

2. Comics cataloger picks up and catalogs the materials.

  • Comics cataloging conventions

  • Special notes and streamer info

    • Use cataloger’s judgment to determine which MARC fields and descriptive conventions are most appropriate.

    • Refer to Special Collections (general) for example 5XX notes.

    • Use $5 MiEM at the end of any recorded information specific to MSUL’s item.

  • Subject and genre term assignment

    • Refer to this spreadsheet which crosswalks formerly employed local headings to current preferred terminology:

  • Problems/questions

    • Make notes on the back of the streamer for the Comics Studies Librarian and return to the shelves.

  • When cataloging is complete

    • Write the call number on the back of the streamer.

    • Return to the shelves.

    • Email the Comics Studies Librarian to notify them that materials are awaiting pickup.

Physical processing/tagging will be handled by SPC.
