Project summary/background
The original ROVI data did not distinguish between personal and corporate body names. But MARC records do! This project is to figure out whether these entities are persons or groups, and correct the bibliographic records accordingly.
The challenge here is that you don’t have access to the physical CDs, so you must find a digital image or a listing in a online database that lets you identify the entity. A combination of clues and some inferences may be required!
Project instructions
Open the ROVI Ambiguous Names spreadsheet. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1A0T16s-DaTDpKs5w26FupOcqBjMWqHeHR6bQ5tvPfyY/edit?usp=sharing
Put your initials by some of the entries. This will prevent multiple people from trying to edit the same field in the same record at the same time.
Search the name in Sierra. Look at the bib records and decide whether this name entry is correct. This decision may require doing one or more of the following searches:
Search LCNAF both as a personal & a corporate body name. Tip: You can search both at the same time by using two drop down boxes (one for personal, one for corporate) with “OR” as the operator.
If you find the name, use it in the bib record.
Search Discogs. The Advanced search lets you search a title and a name at the same time.
You may find identifying info about the entity and/or a digital image of the CD to help with your identification.
If you can identify the entity, correct the bib record as needed to make the name conform to NACO & MARC rules.
Search AllMusic. This is an online version of the data ROVI gave us, so any mistakes in the bib records may be duplicated here.
You may find identifying info about the entity and/or a digital image of the CD to help with your identification.
If you can identify the entity, correct the bib record as needed to make the name conform to NACO & MARC rules.
Search Amazon. Use the UPC code found in the 024 field of the bib record. This may lead you to a digital image of the CD.
You may find identifying info about the entity and/or a digital image of the CD to help with your identification.
If you can identify the entity, correct the bib record as needed to make the name conform to NACO & MARC rules.
Search CDBaby. NOTE: This is only available until March 31, 2020.
You may find identifying info about the entity and/or a digital image of the CD to help with your identification.
If you can identify the entity, correct the bib record as needed to make the name conform to NACO & MARC rules.
Search Google. If all else fails, search Google for [Title of CD] by [Name of entity]
You may find identifying info about the entity and/or a digital image of the CD to help with your identification.
If you can identify the entity, correct the bib record as needed to make the name conform to NACO & MARC rules.
Rinse & repeat!
Feel free to cherry-pick the list!
