Uncat searches

Summary: Procedure identifies workflow for searching for books that have the status of "in process" in the public catalog, colloquially referred to as uncats.

Uncat searches for branch books

  • Catalog Maintenance receives an Inter library Services (ILS) search request for a branch new book, the search is noted on the stat sheet with a hash mark and a small letter b.
  • When the book is found, the item record will have a p placed in the Cat review field and a Problem note field should be created stating: Branch new book. Return to "Problems from ILS shelf" in Catalog Maintenance for flag.
  • ILS is notified via e-mail the search has been successful and the ILS paperwork with a red flag is placed in the book.
  • The book is sent for rush processing. The rush processor identifies the ILS uncat request and verifies the item record has the p and the problem note. The book goes on to ILS.
  • If a book is found on a ready to be shelved truck, the p and the note should be placed in the item record before the book is delivered to ILS.
  • ILS folks check in the piece when it returns, the p in the Cat review field will come up and the piece will come to Catalog Maintenance for review on the "Problems from ILS shelf".
  • The piece is reviewed in Catalog Maintenance to identify the problem situation. The Branch New Book flag will be inserted and the item record p and note will be eliminated.
  • Catalog Maintenance will not checkin the piece before sending it to the branch. The in-transit from ILS is more important then the in-transit from Catalog Maintenance.

Acquisition uncat searches

  • Acq. gets uncat searches. When the book is found, the ILS uncat paperwork is left in the piece.
  • The Catalog Maintenance rush processor will see the presence of the ILS flag in a branch book, and the p and the note will be placed in the item record at this point.
  • ILS will check in the book and find the p and the problem note. The book will come to Catalog Maintenance as described above for the flag and the item record note removal.
