Collection notes & parameters

Summary: This page lists gift notes, series titles, and/or extra cataloging steps required for special collections of materials (usually gift collections but also purchased materials). The list is generally arranged by the last name of the donor. In the absence of a donor, the collection is listed by a shorthand of its official title. See also the list of Endowment & other notes maintained by CatMan (there is some overlap between these two lists, but they are used for separate processes).

Golden Books

  • Parameters
    • Contact: Leslie McRoberts
    • Location: sprpo (Popular Culture Remote)
  • Fields
    • 050 – If only a PZ call number is present, add an appropriate PS call number for use in our local catalog

NOTE: Until 1958, Simon & Schuster published Little Golden Books (LGB) in partnership with Western Publishing or Western Printing and Lithographic Company of Racine, Wisc.; after that date, S&S sold LGB rights to Western, who published the series under their own imprint called Golden Press. Legacy cataloging of these Golden Press editions in WorldCat reflects confusion around printing and copyright variations; however, these differences do not truly warrant separate records, according to OCLC's guidelines and FRBR principles. When feasible, catalogers are encouraged to unify duplicate records into one master record for the manifestation which accommodates such variations. See below for how to accomplish this.

    • 246s for all possible title variants and cover title
      • examples:
      • 245 14 The little golden fire engine book
      • 246 30 Fire engine book
      • 246 34 Fire engines : $b a little golden book
    • 264 _1 including multiple publisher names if present on the piece
    • 264 _4 for latest copyright date on the piece
    • 500: Some printings list both Western Publishing or Western Printing and Lithographic Company of Racine, Wisconsin, and its imprint, Golden Press or Golden Books of New York; some printings may list only one of these.
    • 500: Latest copyright date and series volume numbering vary among printings.
    • 500: Original copyright date: ####. (if needed)
    • 500 for any further clarifying information drawn from the Golden Books bibliographies
      • If used, cite the bibliography in field 510.
    • 490 for every series present w/ numbering; can repeat $v for more than one volume number
    • 830 for Little golden books, no numbering
    • 775 – for linking Simon & Schuster editions to later Western/Golden Press reproductions and vice versa, catalogers may use this field as outlined here
