Lockwood (Romani & Foodways) project
- MSU TechServices
- Joshua Barton
Summary: Procedure detailing project to process and catalog the William G. Lockwood and Yvonne R. Lockwood gift of Romani Ethnology and Gypsy Stereotypes and the Collection of National, Ethnic and Regional Foodways, a MSU Libraries collection of distinction.
Some books from this collection may have dirt or rodent/insect waste on them. These substances have potential to be a health hazard. Before proceeding with any cataloging or processing, set aside any books in need of cleaning and route to the Conservation Lab box by box for treatment.
Lockwood materials are an SPC gift collection which consists of two separate subgroups: the Romani/Gypsy collection and the Foodways collection (mostly cookbooks). The majority of the non-English titles have already been /wiki/spaces/TSdoc/pages/128352285, so in-house cataloging will mostly be dealing with English or Western European languages. Boxes of these materials are currently stored in Giltner. Books to be cataloged will be delivered periodically to the SPC cataloging shelves by facilities.

- Duplicate titles
- If MSUL holds a title in Business or Main, SPC would like a second copy
- If the title dups to something already held in SPC, place the item on the dup shelf on the SPC cataloging truck
- Gift notes for added copies or serial issues
- Sometimes you may need to adjust the 590 language to refer to a specific copy or serial issue, like so:
- MSU: SPC 1994/95 issue gift of William G. Lockwood and Yvonne R. Lockwood.
- MSU: SPC copy gift of William G. Lockwood and Yvonne R. Lockwood.
- As with all SPC cataloging, retain dust jackets and make a note as needed (example above)
- Refer to general Special Collections (general) cataloging procedures for other rare book cataloging considerations.
Processing
