880 fields

Summary: Guide for catalogers concerning the use of 880 fields, which permit inclusion of non-Roman characters in English-language catalog records.

  • An 880 field must be the non-Roman equivalent of and paired with another MARC field, like the 245 or the 264
  • All characters should be in entered and coded correctly for our ILS, which uses Unicode
  • In records where coding is incorrect or incompatible with our OPAC, thereby making the non-Roman characters illegible in our public display:
    • attempt to change the coding of the record
    • if changes aren't feasible, delete the 880 fields containing the illegible characters
