Cat seps

Summary: Instructions for the "cat seps" workflow, which involves cataloging certain selected issues of serials as monographs.

General info about cat seps

  • Identified by Serials Acquisitions streamers which have the "CAT AS SEP" option circled.
  • Placed by Acq staff on a special shelf in the copy cataloging shelving area by Kay's office.
  • Do not have order records (but do have check-in records, which is how we track purchasing and receiving of issues of serials)

Cataloging cat seps

Typical monographic copy or original cataloging procedures apply. There are only a few special considerations. Cat seps should receive:

  • An individual call number based on the subject headings assigned to the piece in hand
    • Rather than the call number of the serial title (which may occasionally appear on the Serials Acquisitions streamer, and can be ignored)
  • 490/8XX series fields with the name of the serial title (usually already established)

Records for cat seps are exported from Connexion without an overlay command, since cat seps do not have order records.

If no copy is found for a cat sep, it's generally a good idea to hang on to the item and search again in a few weeks. If copy is still not available at that point, return the item to Kim W. so she can create an order record for it and send it to T Loc H.

Policies

Cataloging treatment of cat seps is determined by subject specialists.
