Webcats

Webcats

Summary: This procedure covers one-time cataloging of free, individual web resources requested by selectors via the bibtrack request form (colloquially referred to as "webcats").

Selectors:

Use this form to request a webcat: http://bibtrack.lib.msu.edu/

Submitting requests

  • Selector creates an “order” by completing and submitting form at: http://bibtrack.lib.msu.edu/

  • The form requests:

    • the resource URL, as it should appear in the catalog

    • a title as apparent to someone viewing the record

    • the HTML tag title

    • selectors' initials

    • a fund code

Acquisitions processing

  • Since the switch from Sierra to FOLIO, Acquisitions is no longer involved.

Cataloging

  • On a regular basis, usually weekly, an original cataloger views new requests on the bibtrack form at the URL above.

  • If the URL for the resource does not work, cataloger attempts to find a working URL. If one is not found, cataloger emails the selector. If selector also does not find a working URL, cataloger marks the request status as "Error"

    • Cataloger must sign in with library credentials to edit status.

  • If the URL does not link to a freely-available resource, cataloger emails the selector. If a different URL cannot be supplied, cataloger marks the request status as "Error"

  • If the URL links to a freely-available resource, the cataloger catalogs the resource according to current practice for the appropriate format.

    • Format is most often text or integrating resource, but may also be graphic, video, etc.

    • Request help as needed from a cataloger familiar with the format (eg, maps, serials)

    • If the resource is a serial, neither holdings nor an LDR is done.

  • In the FOLIO item record, cataloger includes a staff note with the request number (eg, webcat #1234)

  • Cataloger marks the bibtrack request status as "Closed"

Policies
  • Candidates for web cataloging will be tracked, selected, and submitted separately by selectors.

  • The resource at the URL will be cataloged once, with no on-going cataloging work performed, as is true for standing orders.

  • New articles on an already-cataloged blog or new episodes of a podcast cataloged as a collection are a kind of incremental new content are not eligible for individual cataloging.
