Browsing collection

Summary: Procedure details specialized steps to be followed in the cataloging of items for the Browsing Collection – a sublocation at MSU Libraries.

  1. Follow this procedure if the record meets the 'OK to Catalog' criteria in your cataloging procedure. If there's something about the copy which bumps the book from your workflow, transfer the book to the RUSH shelf in Acquisitions. Insert receiving ("MAGIC") streamer and shelf-ready streamer (if the book is from a shelf-ready truck).
  2. Use EEMD in the 049 field.
  3. Location code is BR.
  4. Write the call number on the inside of the front cover for hardcover books and on the verso of the title page for paperback books. Do not write the call number in the book for shelf-ready titles.

Historical practice for hardcover books was to write the call number on the inside of the front cover as well as on the first flyleaf (top left-hand cover, on the side facing the following page). Catalogers were told this was no longer necessary, per CatMan, January 2021.

  5. Do NOT use a location stamp.
  6. If the book has a dust jacket, leave it on the book.
  7. Insert an orange Browsing collection flag.
  8. Place the cataloged book on the RUSH shelf in CatMan.

Policies
  • Comprised of popular titles (with imprints 3 years or newer), this collection has a unique location in the catalog and its own acquisition fund.
  • Materials selected for Browsing are processed through RUSH workflows upon receipt.
  • The collection is located in the Main Library's South Lobby.
  • Catalog Maintenance weeds the collection each year, transferring the titles to the Main collection or appropriate unit or branch per the item's classification number.
