Summary: This procedure describes how to process items picked up by Catalog Maintenance staff from the problem shelf in Circulation.
The items should be processed as follows:
- Verify all items have a barcode on the back cover. If there is not one, create a duplicate barcode, place it on the back of the book, and cover it with a barcode shield.
- If the piece has a barcode:
- Check the item record, verify that the record information matches the piece, and scan the barcode into the record.
- If there is no item record, create an item record, place a barcode on the back of the book, and scan the barcode into the item record.
- If there is no instance record, then the record will have to be restored.
- If the piece is unbarcoded:
- Add a barcode to the piece.
- Search for the record using, call number, title, etc.
- Check the item record, verify that the record information matches the piece, and scan the barcode into the record.
- If there is no item record, create an item record, and scan the barcode into the item record.
- If there is no instance record, then the record will have to be restored.
- Items that have problem notes:
- Investigate as needed to fix the problem.
- Delete problem notes after the problem is resolved.
- Remote Storage books placed on shelves will usually have problem check-in and check-out notes but may also have other problem notes. Delete problem notes after problem is resolved. Place finished books on Remote shelves by mailroom.
